A less invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus is called a laparoscopic hysterectomy. A small camera is implanted after a small incision is made in the abdominal button. The surgeon carries out the surgical procedure while seeing the image from this camera on a TV. The lower abdomen also receives two or three additional minor incisions. For the removal procedure, specialized instruments are introduced and used. When having a hysterectomy, some women's ovaries are not removed. The woman does not have hot flashes or the need to take hormones following the procedure if the ovaries remain inside. Ovarian cancer in the family or an abnormal development on the ovary are two reasons why some women choose to have their ovaries removed. Women have the option of retaining the cervix (referred to as a "laparoscopic supra-cervical hysterectomy") or having the uterus and cervix completely removed (referred to as a "total laparoscopic hysterectomy"). The procedure is a bit safer and faster when the cervix is kept in situ. There is a 5% possibility that a woman with an intact cervix will experience monthly spotting around the time of her periods. Continue receiving pap smears if your cervix stays in place.
