Polycystic ovary syndrome (also known as polycystic ovary syndrome – PCOS) is a complicated hormonal condition. The term polycystic literally means many cysts. This really refers to the presence of numerous partially formed follicles on the ovaries, each of which contains an egg. These rarely reach maturity or produce fertilizable eggs. Women with PCOS often have elevated insulin or male hormones known as "androgens" or both. The cause is unknown, but insulin resistance is believed to be the primary problem in this syndrome. PCOS runs in families in some women, but in others it only appears when they are overweight. PCOS is quite common, especially in infertile women. It affects 12 to 18% of women of reproductive age (between late adolescence and menopause). Almost 70% of these cases are still undiagnosed.
