In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the few techniques available to help people with financial problems have a child. During IVF treatment, an egg is extracted from a woman's ovaries and treated with sperm in a research center. The fertilized egg, known as an embryo, is then returned to the woman's womb to grow and develop. Before the actual IVF treatment begins, you may be given prescriptions to control your menstrual cycle and, depending on the convention, you may be asked to give injections. When you get your cycles, on the second day of your period, before you start treatment, you will have an ultrasound to check your ovaries and look for ovarian growths. Stimulation of the ovaries will be supplemented with gonadotropin injections followed by an ultrasound examination of the development and progression of the follicles. Blood tests to assess estrogen levels and progesterone may be required to rule out premature luteinization. When the follicles have reached the desired size, the egg retrieval will be scheduled 36 hours after the start of HCG.
