Prostate

Category PROSTATE

The prostate is a small gland that is situated below the urinary bladder and forms the prostatic part of the urethra. As men grow everyone has prostatic enlargement called BPH- benign prostatic hyperplasia. The normal weight of the prostate gland is about 20 to 24 gms. As we age, it grows and obstructs our passage of urine. That is when we begin to have urinary symptoms. A 40 gm prostate may cause severe symptoms in one man and another man with a 60 gm prostate might be completely symptom-free – hence prostatic size is not a proxy for a person being symptomatic. Many times we don’t realize that we are actually having difficulty in voiding as this process develops over a period of time – but certain tests do tell us like uroflowmetry and post-void residue. Hence if you have a doubt about whether you have a problem with your prostate consult your urologist now. Even if surgery is needed it is an incision-less totally endoscopic procedure.

Sometimes this prostate gland can have cancerous changes and form carcinoma prostate that spreads easily to the bones. Regular testing per a rectal examination by a qualified urologist is the key to keeping this disease process in check.

Prostatic infections are very common in young sexually active males. If you are young, having a burning sensation while passing urine, and sexually active you need to consult your urologist today.

Acute retention of urine – means not being able to pass urine suddenly is usually due to a stone that has dropped down from your kidney through the ureter into the bladder and is now blocking your urethra – all these problems can be fixed endoscopically without any skin incision on your body. Consult your urologist today.
